Nand Kishore Chaudhary
Mr. Nand Kishore Chaudhary (NKC) is the founder of Jaipur Rugs. It is his story of success and prominence that clearly shows how determination and willpower, when coupled with knowledge, clear vision and proper planning, enables one to reach the pinnacle.
In 1978, he initiated his carpet business operations with just two looms and 9 artisans. Today, it has converted into a network of thousands of artisans spread across India. His consistent hard work has made him India’s leading carpet manufacture and exporter. The carpets are exported to more than 40 countries across the world. Mr. NK Chaudhary’s vision is to see Indian hand-knotted rug industry at par with the international industry. For this, he is constantly working to promote and facilitate research in the rug industry with special focus on product development and technology inclusion.
Mr. NK Chaudhary lays his belief in an ancient principle that says
Give a man a fish; feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish; feed him for a lifetime.
The connotation for this proverbial saying suggests that the capability to work is of greater benefit than a one-off handout which further implies that it is best to teach the person how to survive than to provide all his needs and learn nothing. Extending its efforts to empower and provide a sustainable livelihood to underprivileged strata of the society, Jaipur also educates women to help them in lead a respectful and dignified life.
Having been born in an Agarwal family, Chaudhary learnt about the evil of caste discrimination prevalent in the society, which Chaudhary has attempted to improve to a large extent. His very first artisans belonged to the community that was considered as untouchable, but Chaudhary envisioned beyond this and valued work, talent and functions to uplift the livelihood of many such artisans. By elevating their status from mere wage earners to becoming business owners, Chaudhary provides better ways of leading a financially empowered life to artisans, especially women below poverty line.
