Bugli Devi has been weaving for the past 25 years now and is a mother of 3 children, residing in village named Nagal, Rajasthan. Her daughter also weaves along with her, sometimes joined by her husband who is a mason in the village.
Shakkarpara
To design this rug, the weaver-designer Bugli Devi, turned to hills and rock structure around her for inspiration. She was helped by her daughter Pooja in designing this rug and choosing the colours. One end of the rug has the initials of everyone’s name in family. The trees woven on rug are inspired by a big tree near her house. Along with this tree, she has woven various nature inspired patterns such as flowers and birds across the rug. The striped diamond shaped motifs are inspired by shakarpara, a popular village snack and Chaukri, an Indian seat on which the bride and groom are seated during their wedding. Popular Rajasthani textile design leheriya, along with Deepak, auspicious lamps used in home have also found their way on the woven rug. The weaver has chosen different hues along with her daughter to give this rug a ‘modern’ palette.
